Automotive Mechanic (Heavy Vehicle Road Transport)

The apprentice in pursuit of this role will primarily service and repair the mechanical parts of road transport vehicles such as the engine, suspension systems including springs, steering, brakes, wheels and tyres, transmissions including the clutch, gear box and differential.

The apprentice may discuss problems with vehicle owners to discover faults to assist carrying out their diagnosis procedures. They will repair and service engine forced induction systems, diesel fuel systems, air conditioning, cooling systems and clutch assemblies. In addition, they may repair and service engines, air braking systems, manual and automatic transmissions, final drive assemblies, repair and service steering and suspension systems. The repair of electrical systems, electronic engine management, the ignition and safety/roadworthy inspections are also part of the heavy vehicle mechanic’s duties.
